Season: There is usually Summer or Drought from January to March , during these months the rivers and wetlands decrease considerably, there is a shortage of water, so the birds, and in general the fauna, gather near the bodies of water, facilitating the observation of fauna. It is also the season of boreal migratory birds. During the Winter or rainy season, which goes from May to December , the plains, bodies of water and wetlands have a lot of water and the birds and animals disperse, however the birds accentuate their colors in the plumage since it is the reproductive season of species such as capybaras, anacondas and palm bears. Horseback riding through the flooded areas is a great adventure and the landscapes with the rain are very popular with travelers. During the rest of the year they are transition months, so rain and sunny days can occur alternately.
Accommodation: Trips to Casanare include stays in rural accommodations, located on ranches or large farms. The rooms are located in traditional houses, in double, twin, quadruple or single accommodations. Each room has its own private bathroom, towels and their respective amenities (shampoo, toilet paper and soap). There is no air conditioning or fans in the rooms. There is electric service. Cell phone and WiFi signal is intermittent, not guaranteed. There is no pool, hot water or TV service. In the common areas there is a dining room, hammock area and large gardens where you can relax.
Food: The menu focuses on traditional food from the Llanos, highlighting dishes such as Mamona a la llanera, pisillo, hallacas, shredded beef, roasted wild pig, among others, accompanied by yuca, plantain, and rice. There are also vegetarian and vegan options, which must be requested in advance when making the reservation. The drink that accompanies lunch and dinner is usually natural juice, lemonade, or water.
Transportation: The tours during the activities are done on horseback. They are native breed horses that have been trained to be ridden reliably. For short rides, no experience is required, however, for multi-day rides, moderate to high experience is required. All horseback activities have a safety introduction according to the level of expertise. The tours in 4x4 vehicles during the tour usually have a capacity of 4 to 6 people each, if your reservation is for less than 4 people, the activities may be done on horseback or an additional supplement must be paid for that type of transportation. That same supplement must be paid additionally in case you do not want or cannot do any of the horseback rides included in the tour. The plans start and end in the nature reserves, however the 4x4 transportation service can be added from Yopal at the time of confirming your reservation. It is important that if you go in your own vehicle, it is 4x4, especially due to the road conditions in the winter or rainy season. From Yopal to the reserves in San Luis de Palenque it is a 2-3 hour journey, therefore it is suggested to arrive on the earliest flight to Yopal, or arrive the night before to this city, and leave on one after noon.
Activities: No additional tours or walks are included in the plan or tour package. Depending on your time and budget, it is possible to do nature and cultural experiences. Please consult with the host and bring cash to pay for them.
Sustainability: Casanare is a fragile and vulnerable territory. It is important to be a responsible traveler and contribute to its conservation. Avoid generating or littering, take it back home. Make responsible use of natural resources (water, electricity), which are scarce in the area. Respect wildlife and ecosystems. Buying handicrafts is a way to support local communities. Respect the culture and traditions of indigenous communities. Avoid taking photographs of people without their permission.
Wildlife observation: Casanare is a very biodiverse region that allows for relatively easy encounters with wildlife. Emblematic species can be observed in large populations. However, it cannot be 100% guaranteed that a particular animal will appear, since encounters in nature have different surprise factors and variability. Wildlife observation requires minimal disturbance, which is why the use of binoculars is required to admire their behavior and beauty. Under no circumstances should birds be frightened with noise to make them take flight. Do not provide food or leave waste on the trail so as not to alter the diet of the species. In order not to disturb the tranquility of the animal species, the use of flash must be turned off promptly. The minimum recommended for the Safari Llanero plan is 3 days 2 nights in the nearest reserves. However, there are other reserves that, due to their distance and travel time, we recommend a minimum of 4 days – 3 nights, and thus be able to have more effective days to search for and sight wildlife in their habitat.
Traveling with children: Although there is no age restriction for traveling to the destination, it is recommended to take these trips with children over 7 years old. This is not really a recommended trip for children under 6 years old, given the activities and daily travel times. In the stay packages , children between 5 and 10 years old pay a differential rate , and from 11 years old the adult rate applies. In the vehicles, children from 3 years old occupy a seat and therefore pay for the service.
Traveling with pets: Pets are not allowed on trips to Casanare due to phytosanitary issues and the impossibility of participating in wildlife watching activities. If you want to bring them, keep in mind that they must remain locked or tied up in the accommodation during the development of the activities.
Other travel tips: In Yopal it is relatively easy to access banking services but it is recommended to carry cash. Claro is the cellular operator that has the best connectivity in the area. It is important to inform, before the trip, if you suffer from any illness or allergies. Bringing a camera and binoculars makes it easier to observe the fauna and flora. The WiFi service is limited during the trip, it is not a destination for travelers who require very good connectivity.
